6. Tatara Ba

[Ashitaka and the two wounded men emerge from the forest in sight of the Tatara Ba¹, which is a huge island fortress on the other side of a lake. Smoke is running from the center of it, and the mountains around it are totally devoid of trees.]

Kouroku:

ウァーー。ダンナすげえ、ドンピシャだ。
Ua--. Danna sugee, dompisha da.
Ahhh. Sir, wonderful, you're right!

タタラについた！
Tatara ni tsuita!
We've arrived at the Tatara!

Ashitaka:

まるで城だな
Marude shiro da na
Seems almost like a castle.

Kouroku:

エボシ様の大タタラでさぁ。
Eboshi-sama no oo-tatara desaa.
It's Eboshi-sama's huge tatara.

砂鉄を沸かして鉄を作ってるんです
Satetsu o wakashite tetsu o tsukutteru n desu
It heats iron sand and produces iron.

[Ashitaka pulls the mask of his hood over his face. Two men of Tatara Ba, carriers waiting by their ferry boat on Ashitaka's side of the lake, see Ashitaka's party approach.]

[人足イ] (Ninsoku I) Coolie i:

森から人が来る
Mori kara hito ga kuru
People are coming from the forest.

[人足ロ] (Ninsoku Ro) Coolie ii:

もののけか......？！
Mononoke ka......?!
Mononoke......?!

Kouroku:

オーーイ、オレだー、牛飼いの甲六だーーッ
O--i, ore da-, ushikai no Kouroku da--
Hey, it's me, Kouroku, the cattle herdsman!

[Within Tatara Ba, Kouroku's co-workers receive the news of his return.]

[牛飼い達] (Ushikai-tachi) Cattle herdsmen:

ナニィ、甲六が
Nanii, Kouroku ga
What, Kouroku...

幽霊じゃねぇのか
Yuurei ja nee no ka
You're sure it's not a ghost?

まさか......
Masaka......
You're kidding......

エレエこった！！
Eree kotta!!
Phenomenal!!

カカァに知らせろ
Kakaa ni shirasero
Notify his wife!

[A number of Ishibiya troops, wearing yellowish-brown clothes (柿色衣の石火矢衆, kaki-iro-goromo no ishibiya-shuu) are lounging about and eating when the news about the arrival of their comrade (the other wounded man -- Yashichi?) arrives.]

[柿衣] (Kaki-goromo) Ishibiya trooper ("persimmon clothes"):

ウソじゃない。
Uso ja nai.
No lie.

今、舟でこっちへ来る
Ima, fune de kotchi e kuru
They're heading this way by boat right now!

[柿衣達] (Kaki-goromo-tachi) Ishibiya troops:

顔をしかと見たのか
Kao o shika-to mita no ka
Did you see his face for certain?

Gonza:

エエイ、何事か！？
Eei, nanigoto ka!?
Eh, what is it?!

俺が字を書いている時は静かにしろ！
Ore ga ji o kaite iru toki wa shizuka ni shiro!
I'm writing, be quiet now!

[牛飼い] (Ushikai) Cattle herdsman:

死んだはずの甲六が向こう岸に出たんでさぁ
Shinda hazu no Kouroku ga mukou-gishi ni deta n desaa
Kouroku, who we thought had died, just left the opposite shore!

Gonza:

ナニィ？！
Nanii?!
What?!

[The boat reaches the shore.]

[牛飼いイ] (Ushikai I) Cattle herdsman i:

幽霊じゃねぇな
Yuurei ja nee na
You're not a ghost, are you?

[牛飼いロ] (Ushikai Ro) Cattle herdsman ii:

他の奴はどうした
Hoka no yatsu wa doushita
What about the others?

[牛飼いハ] (Ushikai Ha) Cattle herdsman iii:

あと二人落ちたんだ
Ato futari ochita n da
There were two other men that fell!

Kouroku:

......助けられたのは俺達だけだ
......Tasukerareta no wa ore-tachi dake da
......We were the only ones who were saved.

[A number of people watch the spectacle from the gate of Tatara Ba, which is at the top of a bluff facing the lake shore.]

[女] (Onna) Woman:

死ぬのは牛飼いばかりさ
Shinu no wa ushikai bakari sa
The ones that die are always the cattle herdsmen...

[Gonza comes out of the gate and pauses momentarily, observing the situation below.]

Gonza:

あけろ
Akero
Clear the way!

[男] (Otoko) Man:

ゴンザ様、あの頭巾の者は何者でしょう
Gonza-sama, ano zukin no mono wa nanimono deshou
Lord Gonza, who might that hooded one be?

Gonza:

見なれぬ姿だな
Minarenu sugata da na
I haven't seen the likes of him before...

[At the shore, Ishibiya troops lift their wounded comrade out of the boat, while the cattle herdsmen handle Kouroku.]

Kouroku:

石火矢の衆よ、この旦那が、ずっとおぶって下さったんだ。
Ishibiya no shuu yo, kono danna ga, zutto obutte kudasatta n da.
Ishibiya troops! This man carried [your comrade] all the way here.

礼を言っとけ。
Rei o ittoke.
Thank him!

......アッ、イテテッ
......A, itetete
......Aa, ow ow!

......そこを持つなって
......Soko o motsu natte
......Don't hold me there!

......アイテッ、アッ
......A ite, a
......Aa ow, aa!

[One of the Ishibiya troops bows to Ashitaka. This infuriates Gonza, who stomps down to face Ashitaka.]

Gonza:

チッ......！！そこの者待てぇ！！
Chi......!! Soko no mono matee!!
Sheesh.......!! You there, wait!!

ケガ人を届けてくれたこと、まず礼を言う。
Kega-nin o todokete kureta koto, mazu rei o iu.
Firstly, I thank you for bringing us our wounded.

だが得心がいかぬ。
Daga tokushin ga ikanu.
But I'm not satisfied with the situation.

我らがここへ着いて半刻もせぬ内にお前は来た。
Warera ga koko e tsuite hantoki mo senu uchi ni omae wa kita.
You came within an hour after we arrived here.

しかも、谷底から大の大人を担ぎ、
Shikamo, tanizoku kara dai no otona o katsugi,
Furthermore, they say you carried a large man from the bottom of the valley,

シシ神の森を抜けてだと......
Shishi-gami no mori o nukete da to......
and came out of the Shishi-gami's forest......

[A woman comes running from the gate of Tatara Ba down to face Kouroku at the lake shore.]

[トキ] Toki:

甲六ーーッ、生きとったんかーー
Kouroku--, iki totta n ka--
Kouroku, you're alive?!

Kouroku:

おトキー
O-Toki-
Toki!

Toki:

アーアーアー、このグズ！！
A-a-a-, kono guzu!!
A-a-a, you slouch!!

牛飼いが足を挫いて、どうやってオマンマ食ってくんだよ
Ushikai ga ashi o kujiite, douyatte omamma kutteku n da yo
A cattle herdsman breaking a leg, how are we supposed to eat?!

Kouroku:

ンナッタッテ......**
N-nattatte......
But I couldn't help it......

Toki:

心配ばかりかけやがって。
Shimpai bakari kake-yagatte.
You make me worry all the time.

いっそ山犬に食われちまえば良かったんだ。

You might as well have been eaten by the mountain dogs.

そうすりゃ、あたしはもっとイイ男を見つけてやる
Sou surya, atashi wa motto ii otoko o mitsukete yaru
Then I could find a better man!

Kouroku:

おトキ、堪忍してくれよ~
O-Toki, kannin shite kure yo~
Toki, please forgive me!

Gonza:

トキー、夫婦喧嘩はよそでやらんかい
Toki-, fuufu-genka wa yoso de yara n kai
Toki, can't you have your domestic quarrels somewhere else?

Toki:

何さ偉そうに。
Nani sa era sou ni.
What makes you so great?

ケガ人を捨てて来やがって。
Kega-nin o sutete kita-yagatte.
Abandoning the wounded like that.

なんのための護衛なのさ。
Nan no tame no goei na no sa.
What good are you as a guard?

普段タタラのひとつもふまないんだ。
Fudan tatara no hitotsu mo fumanai n da.
You haven't even pushed a tatara once in your life.

いざという時は生命を張りやがれ......
Iza to iu toki wa inochi o hari-yagare......
You've got to risk your life in a crucial moment like that......

Gonza:

仕方がなかろう...... ア......
Shikata ga nakarou...... A......
It couldn't be helped...... Ah......

Toki:

ありがと。あんな亭主でも助けてくれて嬉しいよ
Arigato. Anna teishu demo tasukete kurete ureshii yo
Thank you. I'm glad you saved even that sort of husband!

Ashitaka:

よかった。連れて来てはいけなかったのかと心配してしまった
Yokatta. Tsuretekite wa ikenakatta no ka to shimpai shite shimatta
That's good. I was starting to get worried that maybe I shouldn't have brought him with me.

Toki:

え？！...... ハハハハ
E?!...... Hahahaha
Eh?...... Hahahaha...

ヘェーーー、いい男じゃないか。
Hee---, ii otoko ja nai ka.
Hey, you must be a good-looking man.

ちょっと顔を見せておくれよ
Chotto kao o misete okure yo
Please let me see your face!

[Lady Eboshi appears with a group of people near the gate above them.]

Eboshi:

ゴンザ
Gonza...

あとで礼を言いたい、客人を案内しなさい。
Ato de rei o iitai, kyakujin o annai shinasai.
I'd like to thank him later on; guide our guest.

Kouroku...

Kouroku:

ヘ、ヘイ
He, hei
Y-yes...

Eboshi:

よく帰って来てくれた。すまなかったな
Yoku kaette kite kureta. Sumanakatta na
It's good you came back safely. I'm sorry.

Kouroku:

ヘ、ヘイ
He, hei
Y-yes...

Toki:

そんな滅相もないエボシ様。
Sonna messoumonai Eboshi-sama.
That's absurd, Eboshi-sama.

バカがつけあがるだけですよ
Baka ga tsuke-agaru dake desu yo
The fool is just spoiled!

Eboshi:

トキも勘忍しておくれ。
Toki mo kannin shite okure.
Toki, please forgive me as well.

私が付いていたのにザマァなかった
Watashi ga tsuite ita no ni zamaa nakatta
It was shameful since I was with him [when this thing happened].

Toki:

イイエ、男達だけだったら今頃みーんな仲良く、
Iie, otoko-tachi dake dattara ima-goro mi-nna nakayoku,
山犬の腹ん**中に収まってますよ
yama-inu no hara n naka ni osamattemasu yo
Oh no, if it were just the men, about this time they'd all be settling down in peace and harmony inside a mountain dog's belly!

Traveling gentleman, be at ease and rest well!

[Ashitaka lowers his mask and bows his head towards the departing Lady Eboshi.]

Toki:

アラァ！！やっぱりいい男じゃない
Araa!! Yappari ii otoko ja nai
Oh!! I knew it, you are a good-looking man!

[That evening, after the gates of Tatara Ba are closed, the rice brought by Lady Eboshi's caravan is being distributed to the townspeople.]

Man:

モロをやっつけて運んだ米だ、ありがたく食えよ！
Moro o yattsukete hakonda kome da, arigataku kue yo!
This is the rice we defeated Moro to bring here, eat it gratefully!

Woman:

早くしなよ
Hayaku shina yo
Hurry up!

[Ashitaka is eating with the cattle herdsmen. A number of women are gathered outside the door of the dining hall, peering within.]

[女達] (Onna-tachi) Women:

ハハハ、
Hahaha,

どこ、どこ？
Doko, doko?
Where, where?

えッ、あの人？
E, ano hito?
Eh, that man?

[女イ] (Onna I) Woman i:

ほんと、トキの言ったとおりじゃん
Honto, Toki no itta toori jan
Really, just like Toki said!

[女ロ] (Onna Ro) Woman ii:

いい男ねぇ
Ii otoko nee
A good-looking man, isn't he?

[女ハ] (Onna Ha) Woman iii:

ちょっと若すぎない？
Chotto waka suginai?
Isn't he a little young?

Woman i:

年なんか平気なくせに
Toshi nanka heikina kuse ni
Even though you don't care about stuff like a man's age...

[牛飼いA] (Ushikai A) Cattle herdsman A:

しずかにしねぇか。
Shizuka ni shinee ka.
Be quiet, won't you?

通夜をやってるんだぞ
Tsuya o yatteru n da zo
We're holding a wake for the dead here!

[牛飼いB] (Ushikai B) Cattle herdsman B:

イイ男なら、ここにもいるぞォ
Ii otoko nara, koko ni mo iru zoo
As for good-looking men, here are some, too!

Woman i:

やなこった。牛飼いなんて
Yanakotta. Ushikai nante
Not me. What, cattle herdsmen?!

Woman iii:

ねえ、旅のお方。あたい達の所へ来なよ。
Nee, tabi no okata. Atai-tachi no tokoro e ki na yo.
Hey, traveling gentleman. Why don't you come to our place?

こんなクサイ小屋はやめてさ
Konna kusai koya wa yamete sa
Don't stay in a stinking animal pen like this.

[牛飼いC] (Ushikai C) Cattle herdsman C:

てやんでェ。
Teya n dee.
What are you talking about?

俺達が生命がけで運んだ米を食らってよ。
Ore-tachi ga inochi-gake de hakonda kome o kuratte yo.
We put our lives on the line to bring you the rice you're eating!

口が腐るぜ
Kuchi ga kusaru ze
I hope your mouth rots off.

Woman ii:

フン、その米を買う鉄は誰が作ってるのさ
Fun, sono kome o kau tetsu wa dare ga tsukutteru no sa
Huh, who makes the iron that buys that rice?!

Woman iii:

あたい達は夜っぴいてタタラを踏んでるんだ
Atai-tachi wa yoppi ite tatara o funderu n da
We tread the tatara all night long!

Ashitaka:

もし良かったら、あなた達の働く所を是非見せて下さい
Moshi yokattara, anata-tachi no hataraku-tokoro o zehi misete kudasai
If you like, please show me your workplace.

Woman i:

ほんとうかい！？
Hontou kai!?
Really?!

Woman iii:

じゃ、おしろい塗ってタタラ踏まなきゃ
Ja, oshiroi nutte tatara fuma nakya
Well, we should push the tatara with white makeup on!

Woman i:

紅もさす？ハハハハ
Beni mo sasu? Hahahaha
And put on rouge? Hahahaha

Women:

きっとだよ
Kitto da yo
It's a sure thing!

待ってるからね
Matteru kara ne
We'll be waiting for you!

[The women depart, laughing.]

Cattle herdsman C:

ダンナ、気を悪くしねぇで下せぇ
Danna, ki o waruku shineede kudasee
Sir, please don't take offense.

だいたいエボシ様が甘やかしすぎるんで
Daitai Eboshi-sama ga amayaka shisugiru n de
In general, Eboshi-sama pampers them too much.

Ashitaka:

いい村は女が元気だと聞いています
Ii mura wa onna ga genki da to kiite imasu
I hear that in a good village the women are high-spirited.

[牛飼いD] (Ushikai D) Cattle herdsman D:

でもナァ、タタラ場に女がいるなんてなぁ
Demo naa, Tatara Ba ni onna ga iru nante naa
Still, I can't believe there are women in Tatara Ba.

Cattle herdsman A:

普通は鉄を汚すって、そりゃあ嫌がるもんだ。
Futsuu wa tetsu o kegasutte, soryaa iyagaru mo n da.
Generally, we should dislike [having women here] because they defile the iron.

エボシ様ときたら、売られた娘を見るとみんな引き取っちまうんだ
Eboshi-sama to kitara, urareta musume o miru to minna hikitotchimau n da
As far as Eboshi-sama is concerned, she sees the women that were sold off and takes charge of all of them.

[牛飼いE] (Ushikai E) Cattle herdsman E:

優しい方なんだよ
Yasashii kata nan da yo
She's a kind person.

Cattle herdsman C:

じいさん、口から飯が出てるよ
Jii-san, kuchi kara meshi ga deteru yo
Old man, rice is coming out of your mouth!

[牛飼いF] (Ushikai F) Cattle herdsman F:

そのくせよ、掟もタタリもヘッチャラなコフイ人よ**
Sono kuse yo, okite mo tatari mo hetchara na kowai hito yo**
Although she's kind, she's a tough woman who doesn't care about laws or curses!

Cattle herdsman B:

そうそう、山犬なんぞ目じゃねえさ。
Sou sou, yama-inu nanzo me ja nee sa.
That's right, that stuff with the mountain dogs was nothing.

ナゴの守をやった時なんか見せたかったぜ、ナァ
Nago-no-kami o yatta toki nanka misetakatta ze, naa
We wanted to show you about the time she defeated Nago-no-kami, didn't we?

Ashitaka:

ナゴのカミ？
Nago-no-kami?

Cattle herdsman B:

すげェでかい猪でよ。
Sugee dekai inoshishi de yo.
He was an amazingly huge boar!

このあたりの主だったのよ
Kono atari no nushi datta no yo
He was the master of this vicinity.

でよ、だあれも山に近寄れねぇ。
Deyo, daaremo yama ni chikayorenee.
And then, no one could get close to the mountains.

お宝の山を見ながら、人間様は指をくわえてたのよ
Otakara no yama o mi-nagara, ningen-sama wa yubi o kuwaeteta no yo
Humans could only bite their thumbs and look on enviously while seeing the mountains full of treasure!

Cattle herdsman A:

[nods in agreement]

ン、ン。このしもじゃ砂鉄を採り尽くしちまったからな......
N, n. Kono shimo ja satetsu o tori tsukushichimatta kara na......
Yeah, yeah. Since we had used up all the iron sand from these lower reaches......

Cattle herdsman B:

何人ものタタラ師がここを狙ってよ。
Nanninmo no tatara shi ga koko o neratte yo.
All of the skilled tatara people aimed to get there.

みんなやられちまったんだ
Minna yararechimatta n da
Everyone was defeated.

Cattle herdsman C:

俺たちの稼業は山を削るし、木を切るからな。
Ore-tachi no kagyou wa yama o kezurushi, ki o kiru kara na.
Our job is to strip the mountains and cut the trees down.

山の主が怒ってな**
Yama no nushi ga okotte na**
The lord of the mountain became enraged.

[Flashback to Nago-no-kami's attack on the Tatara men. Then drunken revelry breaks out in another part of the dining hall; one of the men there starts dancing around.]

Cattle herdsman A:

オッ、始めやがったな！！
0, hajime-yagatta na!!
Oh, he's gotten started, hasn't he!!

Cattle herdsman B:

[laughing with the other men]

そこへエボシ様が石火矢衆を連れて現れたってわけだ
Soko e Eboshi-sama ga Ishibiya-shuu o tsurete arawaretatte wake da
That's why Eboshi-sama appeared there, leading the Ishibiya troops.

[Flashback to Nago-no-kami being shot by Ishibiya, resulting in a forest fire. Ashitaka holds his right arm tightly, as if it is beginning to bulge again.]

Cattle herdsman C:

ダンナ...... どうしたんで？
Danna...... doushita n de?
Sir...... is something the matter?

腕が痛むんで？
Ude ga itamu n de?
Does your arm hurt?

Ashitaka:

イヤ、その猪のこと**考えていた......
Iya, sono inoshishi no koto** kangaete ita......
No, I was thinking about that boar......

いずくで果てたか、さぞ恨みは深かろう
Izuku de hateta ka, sazo urami wa fukakarou
Where did he meet his end? No doubt his resentment must have been deep.

Eboshi:

アシタカとやら、待たしてすまぬ
Ashitaka to yara, matashite sumanu na
Ashitaka or whatever your name is, sorry for keeping you waiting.

[to Gonza and a waiting woman]

いい鋼だ
Ii hagane da
It's good steel.

あさの送りの支度に手間どってね
Asa no okuri no shitaku ni temadotte ne
The preparation for the morning shipment takes time...

ちょっと休もう。みなにそう言っておくれ
Chotto yasumou. Mina ni sou itte okure
Let's take a break. Please tell everyone so.

Woman:

ハイ
Hai
Yes ma'am.

Eboshi:

[to Ashitaka]

そなたを侍共か、もののけの手先と疑う者がいるのだ
Sonata o samurai-domo ka, mononoke no tesaki to utagau mono ga iru no da
There are people who suspect you as an agent of the samurai or the Mononoke.

このタタラ場を狙う者はたくさんいてね。
Kono Tatara-ba o nerau mono wa takusan ite ne.
There are many people who have set their sights on this Tatara Ba.

旅の訳を聞かせてくれぬか
Tabi no wake o kikasete kurenu ka
Could you please tell me the reason for your journey?

Ashitaka:

このつぶてに覚えがあるはず
Kono tsubute ni oboe ga aru hazu
You should remember this throwing stone.

巨大なイノシシ神の骨を砕き、肉を腐らせ、タタリ神にしたつぶてです
Kyodai na inoshishi-gami no hone o kudaki, niku o kusarase, Tatari-gami ni shita tsubute desu
It is the throwing stone which smashed the bones of a gigantic Boar God and caused its flesh to rot, turning it into a Tatari-gami.

この痣はそのイノシシに止を刺した時に受けたもの。
Kono aza wa sono inoshishi ni todome o sashita toki ni uketa mono.
I received this scar when I dealt the final blow to that boar.

死に至る呪いです
Shi ni itaru noroi desu
It is a curse leading to death.

Eboshi:

そなたの国は？見慣れぬシシに乗っていたな
Sonata no kuni wa? Minarenu shishi ni notte ita na
What about your country? You ride a strange beast...

Ashitaka:

東と北の間より...... それ以上は言えない
Higashi to kita no aida yori...... sore ijou wa ienai
From between the North and the East...... beyond that I cannot say.

Gonza:

きさま！！
Kisama!!
Bastard!!

正直に答えぬとたたき斬るぞォ！！
Shoujiki ni kotaenu to tatakikiru zoo!!
If you don't answer straightforwardly, I'll cut you down!!

Eboshi:

そのつぶての秘密を調べて何とする
Sono tsubute no himitsu o shirabete nanto suru
And what would you do, knowing the secret of that throwing stone?

Ashitaka:

曇り無き眼でものごとを見定め、決める
Kumori-naki manako de monogoto o misadame, kimeru
I will ascertain everything with unclouded eyes, and decide.

Eboshi:

......！？曇り無き眼......。ハハハハハ......
......!? Kumori-naki manako....... Hahahahaha......
......?! Unclouded eyes....... Hahahahaha......

アハハハ......、わかった。私の秘密を見せよう。来なさい
Ahahaha......, wakatta. Watashi no himitsu o miseyou. Kinasai
Ahahaha...... I understand. I will show you my secret. Come!

Gonza:

エボシ様！！
Eboshi-sama!!

Eboshi:

ゴンザ、後を頼むよ
Gonza, ato o tanomu yo
Gonza, I entrust the rest to you!

[Ashitaka follows Lady Eboshi past a large building containing a steel-making furnace; many women are working a large foot-powered bellows ("tatara"), among them Toki and the others who had joked with Ashitaka at the dining hall. Ashitaka pauses briefly outside the door to watch, then follows Eboshi into a fenced garden.]

Eboshi:

ここは、みな恐れて近寄らぬ私の庭だ
Koko wa, mina osorete chikayoranu watashi no niwa da
Here is my garden, which everyone fears and does not approach.

秘密を知りたければ来なさい
Himitsu o shiritakereba kinasai
If you wish to know the secret, come.

[She approaches the door of a building on the far side of the garden; a bandaged person is sitting outside the door.]

じゃまするよ
Jama suru yo
[Sorry for] disturbing you!

[She enters the building; Ashitaka pauses just inside the door. Inside, many bandaged people are working on Ishibiya.]

[病者甲 (女)] (Byousha-kinoe (onna)) Sick person 1 (woman):

ちょうど組み上がったところですよ
Choudo kumiagatta tokoro desu yo
We just finished making one.

Eboshi:

まだ一寸重いな
Mada chotto omoi na
It's still a bit too heavy.

Sick person 1:

そのように軽々と持たれているのに
Sono you ni karugaru-to motarete iru no ni
And you say that while holding it so effortlessly.

[病者乙 (男)] (Byousha-kinoto (otoko)) Sick person 2 (man):

The ones from China are heavy, and hard to use.

この石火矢なら、化け物も侍の鎧も撃ち砕けよう
Kono ishibiya nara, bakemono mo samurai no yoroi mo uchikudake you
With this Ishibiya, we can crush both monster and armor-clad samurai.

コワヤ、コワヤ。エボシ様は国崩しをなさる気だ......
Kowaya, kowaya. Eboshi-sama wa kuni-kuzushi o nasaru ki da......

Anata wa yama no kami no mori o ubai, Tatari-gami ni shite mo akitarazu,
You say that, not satisfied with plundering the forest of the mountain god and turning it into a Tatari-gami,

その石火矢で、更に新たな恨みと呪いを生み出そうというのか
sono ishibiya de, sarani aratana urami to noroi o umidasou to iu no ka
you would bring forth more and more new hatred and curses with that Ishibiya?

Eboshi:

そなたには気の毒だった。あのつぶて、確かに私の放ったもの。
Sonata ni wa ki-no-doku datta. Ano tsubute, tashikani watashi no hanatta mono.
I feel pity for you. That throwing stone certainly is a thing I have fired.

愚かなイノシシめ、呪うなら私を呪えばいいものを
Orokana inoshishi me, norou nara watashi o noroeba ii mono o
Damned foolish boar; if he would put a curse on someone, he should have cursed me...

[Hearing her condescending tone, Ashitaka is consumed by rage. His right arm moves on its own as if it had its own life, reaching for his sword. But Ashitaka restrains his right arm with all his strength.]

Eboshi:

その右腕は私を殺そうとしているのか
Sono migi ude wa watashi o korosou to shite iru no ka
Is that right arm trying to kill me?

Ashitaka:

呪いが消えるものなら私もそうしよう。
Noroi ga kieru mono nara watashi mo sou shiyou.
If the curse would vanish, I would do so.

だがこの右腕、それだけでは止まらぬ
Daga kono migi ude, sore dake dewa tomaranu
But this right arm would not stop at that alone.

Eboshi:

ここの者すべてを殺すまで鎮まらぬか
Koko no mono subete o korosu made shizumaranu ka
Will it not subside until it has killed everyone here?

エボシ様......長が何か申しております
Eboshi-sama...... osa ga nanika moushite orimasu
Eboshi-sama...... the chief has something to say.

エボシ様......その若者の力を侮ってはなりません......
Eboshi-sama...... sono wakamono no chikara o anadotte wa narimasen......

[Later, Ashitaka and Lady Eboshi stand together on a wall outside the lepers' smithy. Eboshi shoots the new-model Ishibiya towards some shadowy, ape-like figures on a far-off hillside.]

Eboshi:

また来ていたか......
Mata kite ita ka......
They've come again?......

夜になるとああして戻ってくるのだ。
Yoru ni naru to aa shite modotte kuru no da.
When night falls, they come back like that.

山を取り戻そうと木を植えに来る......
Yama o torimodosou to ki o ue ni kuru......
They come planting trees to take back the mountain......

アシタカ、ここにとどまり力を尽くさぬか
Ashitaka, koko ni todomari chikara o tsukusanu ka
Ashitaka, won't you stay here and serve us with your strength?

Ashitaka:

あなたはシシ神の森まで奪うつもりか
Anata wa Shishi-gami no mori made ubau tsumori ka
Is it your intention to plunder even the forest of the Shishi-gami?

Eboshi:

古い神がいなくなれば、もののけ達もただのケモノになろう。
Furui kami ga inakunareba, mononoke-tachi mo tada no kemono ni narou.
If the old gods are no more, then even the Mononoke will become mere beasts.

森に光が入り、山犬共が鎮まれば、ここは豊かな国になる。
Mori ni hikari ga hairi, yama-inu-domo ga shizumareba, koko wa yutakana kuni ni naru.
If light enters the forest and the mountain dogs are calmed, this will become a bountiful land.

【さすれば】もののけ姫も人間に戻ろう
[Sasureba] Mononoke-hime mo ningen ni modorou
[If we do so,] the Mononoke-hime may return to being human as well.

Eboshi:

山犬に心を奪われたあわれなむすめだ。
Yama-inu ni kokoro o ubawareta awarena musume da.
She's a pitiful girl whose heart was stolen by the mountain dogs.

私を殺そうと狙い続けている
Watashi o korosou to nerai tsuzukete iru
She continues to watch, trying to kill me.

シシ神の血はあらゆる病を癒すと聞ている。
Shishi-gami no chi wa arayuru yamai o iyasu to kiite iru.
I have heard that the blood of the Shishi-gami can cure any illness.

業病に苦しむあの者達を癒し、そなたの痣を消す力もあるかもしれぬぞ
Goubyou ni kurushimu ano monotachi o iyashi, sonata no aza o kesu chikara mo aru kamo shirenu zo
It may have the power to cure those who are afflicted with incurable disease, and to erase the mark of your curse!

[Ashitaka leaves Lady Eboshi's garden in a pensive mood. He passes the door of the furnace building, where the women are singing while working the foot-bellows.]

Yeah. We tread it for four days and five nights.

Ashitaka:

Koko no kurashi wa, tsurai ka?
Is it a hard life here?

Toki:

そりゃあさ...... でも、下界に比べりゃずっといいよ。ねェ
Soryaa sa...... demo, gekai ni kuraberya zutto ii yo. Nee
Yeah...... but compared to the place we were before, it's a lot better. Isn't it?

[On a hilltop outside Tatara Ba, San (Mononoke-hime) and her two wolf brothers look down upon the fortress. San pets her brothers, then pulls on her mask.

Meanwhile, Ashitaka takes his leave of the women at the foot-bellows.]

Ashita itchyau no?
You're leaving tomorrow?

もっと居ればいいのに
Motto ireba ii no ni
It'd be nice if you stayed longer.

Ashitaka:

ありがとう。【でも】どうしても会わなければならない者がいるんです
Arigatou. [Demo] doushitemo awanakereba naranai mono ga irun desu
Thank you. [But] there is someone I must meet at any cost.

[He senses something in the distance.]

Ashitaka:

来る！！
Kuru!!
(She's coming!!)

Women:

エッ？！
E?!
Eh?!

[San, riding one of the wolves, rushes the walls of Tatara Ba.]

[見張り] (Mihari) Watchman:

もののけ姫だーー
Mononoke-hime da--
It's the Mononoke-hime!

[San is catapulted over the wall into Tatara Ba by the wolf. She evades several shots by the Ishibiya troops. Ashitaka rushes to the spot, followed by Tatara men carrying torches.]

[松明男A] (Taimatsu-dan A) Pine-torch man A:

姫だーー！！
Hime da--!!
It's the princess!!

[San attacks Ashitaka with her wolf's-claw dagger.]

Ashitaka:

やめろ！！
Yamero!!
Stop it!

そなたと戦いたくない！！
Sonata to tatakaitakunai!!
I don't want to fight you!!

[San leaps onto the roof of a nearby building.]

Pine-torch man A:

ご殿の方へ行くぞー
Goten no hou e iku zo-
She's going towards the palace!

Ishibiya trooper:

入ったのは姫ひとりだ
Haitta no wa hime hitori da
The only one that got in was the princess!

[Ashitaka jumps onto the roof, and attempts to follow San.]

Gonza:

かがり火を増やせ、石火矢衆は柵を固めて外へ逃がすな
Kagaribi o fuyase, Ishibiya-shuu wa saku o katamete soto e nigasu na
Reinforce the beacon fire! Ishibiya troops, fortify the wall and don't let her escape outside!

Cattle herdsman C:

持ち場を離れるな。うろたえるんじゃねぇぞ
Mochiba o hanareru na. Urotaerun ja nee zo
Don't stray from your posts. Don't get flustered!

[Inside the furnace building.]

Woman i:

この屋根の上にいるらしいよ
Kono yane no ue ni iru rashii yo
It seems she's up on the roof.

Toki:

騒ぐんじゃない。休まず踏みな。
Sawagun ja nai. Yasumazu fumi na.
Don't make a fuss! Keep on pushing without rest!

火を落とすと取り返しがつかないよ
Hi o otosu to torikaeshi ga tsukanai yo
If we let the fire go down, we won't be able to recover it!

[Outside in the courtyard, Lady Eboshi emerges from her hall.]

Eboshi:

Hitori ka?
She's alone?

Gonza:

ハッ、余程追い詰められたと見えます。
Ha, yohodo oitsumerareta to miemasu.
Yes, it seems that she's completely cornered.

エボシ様を狙ってのことでしょう
Eboshi-sama o neratte no koto deshou
I guess she's aiming for you, Lady Eboshi.

Eboshi:

仕方がない。来なさい
Shikata ga nai. Kinasai
There's no other way. Come.

[Two women carrying new-model Ishibiya follow Lady Eboshi into the fortress courtyard.]

Eboshi:

もののけ姫、聞こえるか。私はここにいるぞ
Mononoke-hime, kikoeru ka. Watashi wa koko ni iru zo.
Mononoke-hime, can you hear me? I am right here.

お前が一族の仇を討とうというなら、
Omae ga ichizoku no ada o utou to iu nara,
If you wish to avenge the harm (we inflicted) upon your clan,

こちらにも山犬に喰い殺された夫の無念を晴らそうと心に決めた者達がいる
kochira ni mo yama-inu ni kuikorosareta otto no munen o harasou to kokoro ni kimeta mono-tachi ga iru
there are people here as well who are resolved to revenge themselves upon you for the deaths of their husbands by the wolves!

[San appears atop the roof of the furnace building.]

Clear the way in front, or you'll be hit by a stray bullet!

(It's a trap!)

Stop it!

山犬の姫、森へ帰れ、みすみす死ぬな
Yama-inu no hime, mori e kaere, misumisu shinu na
Princess of the Mountain Dogs, go back to the forest! Don't die for nothing!

退くも勇気だ。森へ帰れ
Shirizoku mo yuuki da. Mori e kaere
To retreat is also courage. Go back to the forest!

Gonza:

あいつ、やはり
Aitsu, yahari
That guy! Just as I expected.

Eboshi:

好きなようにさせておけ
Sukina you ni sasete oke
Let him do as he likes.

[San rushes down the roof. Ashitaka runs towards her, but Ishibiya fire knocks San from her feet and sends her tumbling down the roof.]

Gonza:

やった、落ちるぞ！！
Yatta, ochiru zo!!
We did it, she's falling!!

Eboshi:

動くな。首だけになっても、喰らい付くのが山犬だ
Ugoku na. Kubi dake ni natte mo, kurai tsuku no ga yama-inu da
Don't move. A mountain dog can still bite you even if it's only a head.

落ちたところを狙いな
Ochita tokoro o nerai na
Aim when she's fallen.

Woman:

ハイ
Hai
Yes, ma'am.

Eboshi:

放てェ
Hanatee
Fire!

[San is hit in the face; her clay mask shatters, and she falls to the ground. Gonza and his men rush towards her with drawn blades.]

Ashitaka:

動くなーー
Ugoku na--
Don't move!

[Ashitaka hurls a roof beam to stop the onrushing men.]

Gonza:

アチチチチ
Achichichichi
Ouch-ouch-ouch-ouch....

[Ashitaka jumps down from the roof, and grabs the dazed San by the shoulders.]

Ashitaka:

しっかりしろ！！
Shikkari shiro!!
Get a grip on yourself!!

[San comes to, and attacks Ashitaka with her wolf's-claw dagger, cutting him below his left eye.]

Ashitaka:

やめろ！！
Yamero!!
Stop it!!

[San evades the armed men by trampling on Gonza's head. She rushes towards Lady Eboshi, and begins a fierce duel with her, encircled by the armed townspeople.]

Man:

やっちまえ！！
Yatchimae!!
Kill her!!

Woman:

袋の鼠だ
Fukuro no nezumi da
She's a mouse in a bag!

Woman:

逃がしちゃだめだよ
Nigashicha dame da yo
Don't let her escape!

[鍛冶衆達] (Kaji-shuu-tachi) Blacksmith people:

[As Ashitaka watches the duel, he marshals his anger at the entrapment of San; phantom "snakes" appear on his right arm. He starts walking towards San and Eboshi.]

うぬは...... やはりもののけ類か！！
Unu wa...... Yahari mononoke tagui ka!!
You rascal...... I knew it, you must be a kind of Mononoke!!

[Ashitaka easily bends Gonza's long sword with only the fingers of his right hand, as if the sword were made of paper.]

Ashitaka:

Doite kure
Please get out of the way.

Gonza:

アワワワワ......
Awawawawa......

[Ashitaka walks past the stunned Gonza, and pushes the crowd aside.]

People:

Hey you, what are you doing...

[Ashitaka cuts in between San and Eboshi. With a superhuman power, he separates them to stop the fight.]

Eboshi:

何の真似だ。アシタカ
Nan no mane da. Ashitaka
What sort of behavior is this, Ashitaka?

Ashitaka:

この娘の生命、私がもらう
Kono musume no inochi, watashi ga morau
I shall take this girl's life into my own hands.

Eboshi:

その山犬を嫁にでもする気か
Sono yama-inu o yome ni demo suru ki ka
You intend to take that mountain dog as your bride?

Ashitaka:

そなたの中には夜叉がいる。
Sonata no naka ni wa yasha ga iru.
There is a demon within you.

この娘の中にもだ
Kono musume no naka ni mo da
Within this girl as well.

[The phantom "snakes" on Ashitaka's right arm are now running wild.]

Ashitaka:

皆見ろ。

Everyone, look!

これが身の内にすくう憎しみと恨みの姿だ。
Kore ga mi no uchi ni sukuu nikushimi to urami no sugata da.
This is the manifestation of the hatred and resentment that haunts my body.

肉を腐らせ、死を呼び寄せる呪いだ。
Niku o kusarase, shi o yobiyoseru noroi da.
It is a curse that rots the flesh, and summons death.

[Lady Eboshi attacks Ashitaka with a knife. Ashitaka knocks her unconscious with the hilt of his sword, then does the same to San. He holds the two women on his shoulders.]

Women:

エボシ様ー！！
Eboshi-sama-!!
Lady Eboshi!!

Ashitaka:

誰か、手を貸してくれ
Dareka, te o kashite kure
Someone, please lend me a hand.

[Some of the women lay down their weapons, and take Lady Eboshi's unconscious body from Ashitaka.]

Women:

エボシ様ーエボシ様
Eboshi-sama... Eboshi-sama...

Ashitaka:

心配するな。じきに気が付く
Shimpai suru na. Jikini ki ga tsuku
Don't worry. She'll regain consciousness soon.

この娘、私がもらい受ける
Kono musume, watashi ga moraiukeru
I shall take this girl!

Women:

エボシ様！！
Eboshi-sama!!

早く水を持っておいで
Hayaku mizu o motte oide
Quick, fetch water!

手足を摩るんだよ
Te-ashi o sasurun da yo
Chafe her hands and feet!

Please wake up...

[Ashitaka drapes the unconscious San over his shoulders, and begins walking towards the fortress gate. Kiyo (one of the Ishibiya women), whose husband had been killed by the wolves, aims her gun at Ashitaka.]

Kiyo:

おまち！！逃がしゃしないよ。よくもエボシさまを......
Omachi!! Nigasha shinai yo. Yoku mo Eboshi-sama o......
Wait!! You won't get away. How could you have done that to Eboshi-sama......

[Ashitaka stops and gives Kiyo a long and searching look, but then resumes walking towards the gate. Kiyo trembles, but raises her gun again.]

Kiyo:

う、動くんじゃない
U, ugokun ja nai
D-don't move!

[中年女] (Chuunen onna) Middle-aged woman:

キヨ、やめな！！
Kiyo, yame na!!
Kiyo, stop it!!

Kiyo:

アア......
Aa......

[The trembling Kiyo, startled, accidentally fires her gun, hitting Ashitaka in the back; the bullet exits from his chest. Blood gushes out from the wound, and drips onto the ground.]

Middle-aged woman:

当たったのに歩いとる......
Atatta noni aruitoru......
Although he was hit, he's still walking......

Gonza:

エボシさまは！？
Eboshi-sama wa!?
How is Lady Eboshi?!

Man:

ご、ご無事です
Go, go-buji desu
S-she's fine...

Gonza:

俺の石火矢を持って来い
Ore no ishibiya o mottekoi
Bring my Ishibiya!

石火矢衆はここへ集まれ。
Ishibiya-shuu wa koko e atsumare
Gather the Ishibiya troops here.

このまま逃がしてなるかぁ
Kono mama nigashite naru kaa
I won't let them get away like this!

[Ashitaka, still carrying San on his shoulders, approaches the furnace building.]

Woman:

おトキ、早く！！
O-Toki, hayaku!!
Toki, hurry!!

[Toki rushes out and stares at Ashitaka, then at the trail of blood he leaves behind him. Ashitaka gives her a smile as he passes.]

Toki:

......！！あ...... あんた ......!!
......!! A...... anta ......!!
......!! Y...... you ......!!

[Ashitaka reaches the fortress gate, Yakkuru following behind. The man (Cattle herdsman C) who asked Ashitaka about his arm at dinner stands in Ashitaka's way.]

Cattle herdsman C:

ダンナ、ここは通れねぇ、
Danna, koko wa toorenee,
Sir, you can't pass through here;

許しがなければ門は開けられねぇんだ
yurushi ga nakereba mon wa akerareneen da.
without permission, the gate can't be opened.

[However, the man stands aside, and Ashitaka walks between two Ishibiya troops guarding the gate.]

[柿衣イ] (Kaki-goromo i) Ishibiya trooper i:

どうかお戻りを
Douka omodori o
We beg you, go back.

[柿衣ロ] (Kaki-goromo ro) Ishibiya trooper ii:

あなたは仲間を助けてを下さった。敵にしとうありません
Anata wa nakama o tasukete kudasatta. Teki ni shitou arimasen.
You rescued our comrade. We do not wish you as a foe.

Ishibiya trooper i:

どうか......
Douka......
We beg you......

Ashitaka:

私は自分でここへ来た。自分の足でここを出て行く
Watashi wa jibun de koko e kita. Jibun no ashi de koko o dete iku
I came here of my own accord. I shall leave here on my own two feet.

Guard i:

無理です。10人かかって開ける扉です
Muri desu. Juu-nin kakatte akeru tobira desu
It's impossible. It takes ten men to open the door.

[Ashitaka begins pushing at the gate with his right arm, attempting to raise it. Blood from the wounds in his chest and back rushes down his legs, and his feet begin to slip in the puddle forming beneath them.]

Cattle herdsman C:

旦那、いけねぇ。死んじまう！！
Danna, ikenee. Shinjimau!!
Sir, please don't. You'll die!!

[ガタ] (Gata) Crowd (of people):

オーーッ、動いた......
O--, ugoita......
Ohh, it moved......

[As Ashitaka lifts the gate above his head, Gonza rushes up with some Ishibiya troops.]

Gonza:

どけーー
Doke--
Get out of the way!

[The two wolves have been waiting outside for San, and rush at the gate.]

Gonza:

山犬だーーーー
Yama-inu da----
It's the mountain dogs!

[Gonza looks for a match to fire his Ishibiya.]

Gonza:

火、火、火......
Hi, hi, hi......
Fire... fire... fire...?

Ashitaka:

[to the wolves]

やめろ！！そなた達の姫は無事だ！！
Yamero!! Sonata-tachi no hime wa buji da!!
Stop it!! Your princess is safe!!

今、そっちへ行く。ヤックル行こう
Ima, sotchi e iku. Yakkuru ikou
I'm coming over there now. Yakkuru, let's go.

[Ashitaka looks politely back at the stunned townspeople.]

Ashitaka:

世話になった
Sewa ni natta
I'm much obliged to you.

[Ashitaka, still carrying the unconscious San, disappears into the darkness with Yakkuru and the two wolves. The gate slams shut behind him.]

Cattle herdsman C:

行ってしまわれた......
Itte shimawareta......
He's gone......

*1. Tatara Ba means "Tatara Place." In a steel-making technology of the era in which Mononoke Hime takes place, a tatara was a giant foot bellows used to force air through a blast furnace.
